What caliber for gators?

In South Carolina, the .357 magnum has been found to do the trick.

I grew up in south west Louisiana (one of the places that has an alligator season). The generally accepted bad medicine for a gator was a 30-06 at about five feed fired into the brain. Not sure what type of bullets were used, but didn't get pass through and only left a 30 caliber hole in the skin on top of the head. I wonder where shop placement was on the one in the story.
