Eric S. Raymond (who, by the way, is always worth your time to read) has a tremendous piece titled "Escalating Complexity and the Collapse of Elite Authority". Don't be put off by the title, it reads well. Be sure to follow the links. It's going to take some time, but it's a very worthy use of your time.
